Brass was born in Toowoomba, Queensland on May 27, 1900. He is especially known for his plant collecting in New Guinea. One of his interests was in the relationship between the floras of New Guinea and Australia. He collected plants for the Arnold Arboretum in New Guinea, 1925-1926 and in the Solomon Islands, 1932.
